Refect on Advanced Search

Filed under: Uncategorized —— ssistevent @ 10:47 pm

Usually, i just type in google what i want to know about. It would take me hours  because there are so many results. Some of them are not even what i want to know about. Today, Mr. Bertoia told us about the 4 NET. That stands for “start Narrow, use Exact phrases, Trim the URL, seek Similar pages”. It is easier for me now because i wouldn’t have to spend more time on finding informations about what i want.

We searched up Atlantis and we got about 42,000,000 results. Some of our results were about resorts and hotels. We also got results about films and movies. After using advanced search. We got about 57,000 results about the lost continent.

We searched up Waterbury, a town in Vermont. We received 7,000,000 results. Some of them talk about another town in Connecticut. We had about 190,000 results after we used the advanced search. We got a map about Waterbury in Vermont and some other information.

We searched up San Diego State University as it said. There were 4,800,000 sites suggested. After we typed in ‘San Diego State University’ we got 1,230,000 sites suggested. Then we tried ‘Bill 602P’, there were only 120 results. Next, we typed in ‘We know he has weapons of mass destruction’, only 30 appeared. Lastly, we tried ‘demonstrating genuine leadership’, 94 sites was suggested.

We learned about triming back URL, we got the site after four trials. ‘http://www.longwood.k12.ny.us/wmi/’ that the site we got. It is a site about a elementary school.

We searched up http://www.ssischool.org/ and look for all the similar sites. We got about 27 similar sites.

Reflect on International Day

On Thursday last week, we got a chance to step in the world of extreme poverty. A guy from a charity in Hong Kong named Cross Road was invited to our school to show us. He showed us how poor people life’s are, some have to smash rock everyday to make money or make paper bag and they have to work everyday from the morning to night. He also told us how hard it is to survive in those conditions. He also had a game for us to understand it deeper. After that, we got to eat lunch. It wasn’t really good but that’s how poor people eat everyday. After lunch, we got to play some other games about disadvantage for not having 1 leg or blind. We also learned about stereotyping.

I learned a lot about extreme poverty. It is very hard to live under these conditions. For example, we had to made paper bags. In that 10 minutes, all we were concentrating about was to make as much bags as possible. People also can’t afford school or sanitaries. People often get sick and cannot help the other family members. They also depends on who they sell there bags to. One of our member was begging the ladies to buy our bags. We also had to sell our family members so we could afford school for one of us.

We could all help buy giving equipments that we don’t need to the charities, so they can gives it to people who really needs it. Our school, Saigon South International School are helping by trying to saves enough money so we could build a school for poor children to study.
